Efficiency drive or retribution in Washington?
So many federal employees have received notices of redundancy, resign or be fired that the millions of people who work for the government in Washington are wondering where their next pay cheque will be coming from. The nominated FBI director Kash Patel, ex-Pentagon, told the Senate committee examining his credentials for the job, promised to look forward not backwards and said there would be no retribution against individuals who took part in the investigation into Trump's supposed links with Russia, all of which turned out to be highly spurious. But now we hear that several senior FBI figures have been told to resign or be sacked. I suspect senior officials at the Pentagon might face a similar warning if it can be shown they were wholly supportive of General Mark Milley when he was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Trump's bete noir. As for the two million federal workers who have been offered redundancy I'd be suprised if no one jumps at the chance because many will be pretty alarmed at the prospect of working for the new administration. Perhaps it will all calm down but right now it's like a giant fireworks display in Washington.
