Is a negotiated settlement with Iran now off the table?
There really doesn't seem any point in renewing the "peace" negotiations between the US and Iran. Both sides are now rigidly in war mode. This is a disaster for the Gulf, for the Middle East, for the world. Donald Trump went to war and hoped for a quick finish. But failed. The "new" regime in Tehran, having lost its supreme leader through assassination, has never really been interested in doing business with the US but just wants revenge, however long it takes. Right now, the generals and mullahs want revenge by hanging onto the Strait of Hormuz, but they probably want personal revenge as well. This is a dangerous period. One hears very little these days of back channel attempts by Pakistan, Qatar and others to get the two sides together. So for the time being, probably the next two or three months, it's going to be war, war, war and no serious negotiations. Again, this is a disaster for everyone. It does demonstrate, does it not, that the United Nations is an ineffective organisation with no role to play at all.
